CHAPTER 1

MISSION, GOALS, AND OBJECTIVES

   I. Mission of AFJROTC

​

The mission of the AFJROTC program is to:

Develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community

 

   II. Goals of AFJROTC

​

As a means of accomplishing our mission, AFJROTC has established a short list of goals and values which all units should strive to instill in their cadets. These are:

  • The values of citizenship

  • Service to the United States

  • Personal responsibility

  • A sense of accomplishment

 

   III. Objective of AFJROTC

​

The objectives of AFJROTC are to educate and train students in citizenship and in life skills. AFJROTC promotes community service, instills a sense of responsibility in cadets, and develops character and self-discipline through education and instruction in aerospace fundamentals. By teaching the Air Force’s core values of integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do, this program enables cadets to:

  • Develop a high degree of strong morals, self-esteem, self-reliance, personal appearance, and leadership

  • Adhere to the values of integrity, service, and excellence

  • Increase their understanding of patriotism and responsibilities as a US citizen

  • Expand their skills of critical thinking and problem solving, communication and collaboration, and creativity and innovation

  • Demonstrate military customs, courtesies, and traditions

  • Develop habits of order, discipline, and social skills

  • Acquire a broad-based knowledge of aerospace science and leadership education

  • Strive to graduate from high school and prepare for college and careers in the 21st century

  • Cultivate a commitment to physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle

 

 

 

   IV. Cadet Honor Code

​

The cadet honor code is:

“I will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do.”

These simple words provide the basis for a personal code of honesty that will sustain cadets for the rest of their lives. The honor code is specific and clear in what it demands: maintaining a high standard of trustworthiness is the responsibility of every cadet. This requires self-control and a conscious effort at all times. It should become a cadet’s ethical code and lifestyle. This is the same honor code used by the USAF Academy.

 

   V. Core Values

​

Core values are the ideals that form the basis of a cadet’s character. They define who a cadet is as a member of AFJROTC. They are not negotiable; they do not change under any circumstance. They are the motivations used to justify all actions. The AFJROTC core values are:

Integrity first, service before self, excellence in all we do

 

   VI. GA-952 Values Approach

​

GA-952 is a unit that strives for its cadets to maintain excellence in all facets of their education. In order to do that, the unit maintains a five-pillar approach to success. GA-952’s five winning behaviors are:

  1. Come to school prepared to learn

  2. Be responsible and accountable for yourself

  3. Maintain and environment conducive to learning

  4. Model respect

  5. Exhibit character and integrity

 

   VII. History of JROTC

​

The JROTC program, as it is known today, began in 1911 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Army Lieutenant Edgar R. Steevers, who was assigned as an inspector instructor of the organized military of Wyoming, came up with the idea of a high school level cadet corps dedicated to making better citizens rather than soldiers. The National Defense Act of 1916 authorized the first JROTC. The ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964 directed the Secretaries of the military services to establish and maintain JROTC units at public and private school that requested a unit and were eligible under regulations established by the Secretaries of the services. This law created the Air Force JROTC program in 1966, forming the first twenty units.

Over the years, the program has grown and expanded, with nearly nine hundred units in existence today across the nation. An expansion program initiated in 1992 by then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell, authorized Cherokee County to create a unit at each county high school in 1995. The official designation for the Sequoyah High School unit is GA-952, authorizing the unit as the second new AFJROTC unit for Georgia in 1995.

 

   VIII. Objectives

​

GA-952 has both academic and leadership objectives that are aimed to ensure cadet’s success both inside and outside of the classroom.

Academic Objectives:

  • Develop and maintain the highest degree of integrity, self-discipline, and commitment to the responsibilities associated being an AFJROTC cadet and a US citizen

  • Pursue academic excellence in all parts of a cadet’s education

  • Become a better-informed citizen on matters pertaining to community, state, national, and world affairs

  • Understand the history, purpose, and potential of aerospace science

  • Become familiar with various methods of aerospace travel, the principles which govern their operation, and future aerospace challenges

 

Leadership Objectives:

  • Develop improved study habits through application of self-discipline and time management techniques

  • Develop a knowledge of and respect for authority

  • Wear of the Air Force uniform in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and guidelines

  • Maintain the appropriate military customs and render the proper courtesies while in uniform

  • Demonstrate socially acceptable conduct at all times

  • Hold themselves and all other cadets accountable to the Cadet Honor Code

  • Foster a spirit of teamwork and good followership among cadets

  • Develop and maintain the highest standards of character and leadership as a role model for other cadets and students.

  • Improving the community through active involvement in betterment activities and service projects

 

   IX. AFJROTC Motto

​

The motto of AFJROTC is:

 

“Leadership by Example”

 

 

   X. AFJROTC Cadet Creed

I am an Air Force Junior ROTC Cadet.

I am connected and faithful to every Corps of Cadets who served their community and nation with Patriotism.

I earn respect when I uphold the Core Values of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do.

I will always conduct myself to bring credit to my family, school, Corps of Cadets, community, and to myself.

My character defines me. I will not lie, cheat, or steal. I am accountable for my actions and deeds.

I will hold others accountable for their actions as well.

I will honor those I serve with, those who have gone before me, and those who will come after me.

I am a Patriot, a Leader, and a Wingman devoted to those I follow, serve, and lead.

I am an Air Force Junior ROTC Cadet.
