CHAPTER 2

PROPER UNIFORM WEAR

   I. Introduction

Each cadet at Sequoyah High School will be issued a complete set of AFJROTC uniforms and must meet the minimum standards for dress, appearance, and conduct at all times.

The United States Air Force uniform is the symbol of a proud and honorable branch of the US Armed Forces. The uniform cadets wear is the same one worn throughout the world by active duty, guard, and reserve Air Force personnel. There are also many retired and former Air Force and other service personnel around who are certain to take notice of the uniform and, more importantly, the cadet wearing it.

Cadets should think about the values that they represent every time they put on their uniform and remember that all cadets will be viewed as a representative of the US Air Force and Sequoyah High School by everyone who sees them in it.

Always wear it properly and proudly!

II. Compliant Wear of the Uniform

  • All cadets must wear the uniform one day each week on the designated Uniform Lab Day (ULD) in compliance with the agreement between Cherokee County Board of Education, Sequoyah High School, and the United States Air Force. The particular day of the week for ULD may change each school term or during a particular week. In accordance with AFJROTC regulations, every cadet will be inspected each ULD.

  • On the designated ULD, cadets must wear the uniform for the entire duration of the school day. Excusal from the requirement to wear the uniform during the entire school day may only be granted by the SASI or ASI, and only based upon conflicting school activities requiring removal of the uniform (band, cheerleading, etc.) or extenuating circumstances deemed beyond the cadet’s control by the SASI / ASI or school principal. Cadets will be required to dress out for physical education and must put the uniform back on after the class is over.

  • If a cadet is not in uniform on a particular ULD and does not have a legitimate excuse from the appropriate authority (SASI / ASI or principal), said cadet must wear the uniform the following day for the entire school day. In accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement between the Air Force and School District, Cadets refusing to wear the uniform properly and with honor will be removed from the program.

  • Cadets will not wear the uniform to non-AFJROTC activities without the consent of the SASI / ASI. It is strictly prohibited to wear the uniform while participating in a demonstration or any other public or private event which could bring discredit upon the school, the community, the US Air Force, or the US government. If you have any question about the appropriateness of wearing the uniform, consult the SASI / ASI before doing so.

   III. Uniform Designations

There are 3 primary uniform combinations with which cadets should be familiar:

  • Service Dress (Class A)

  • Duty Uniform (Class B, Class C)

  • Airman Battle Uniform (ABU)

Service Dress:

  • includes wear of the service dress coat with appropriate officer/enlisted rank and JROTC insignia

  • nametag and any other designated items of distinction (ribbons, badges, cords)

  • shirt (male), blouse (female)

  • tie (male), tab (female)

  • trousers (male), slacks or skirt (female)

  • issued belt and buckle

  • black socks (solid color), hose in approved shades, females in slacks may wear “knee-highs” or black socks, but must wear pantyhose or nylons when the skirt is worn

  • Air Force issued shoes

  • flight cap with appropriate rank insignia

Duty Uniform:

  • includes shirt/blouse with rank, nametag, cords, ribbons/devices as appropriate attached

  • tie/tab optional, may be directed by the SASI/ASI

  • trousers/slacks/skirt as appropriate, belt and buckle

  • black socks/pantyhose or nylons as appropriate

  • Air Force issued shoes

  • flight cap with appropriate insignia

The Air Force Windbreaker (zip-up style blue jacket) will also be issued to each cadet. It may be worn with the Duty Uniform combination only. Appropriate rank insignia will be worn on the collar, and the zipper will remain zipped up 2/3 of the way to the collar.

  • solid, olive drab t-shirt

  • pants, properly bloused to the top of the boot

  • issued nylon belt

  • 8” combat boots, coyote brown or sage green, with laces tucked in

  • Olive drab socks

   IV. General Uniform Standards

  • The SASI / ASI will designate which uniform will be worn on each ULD.

  • Cadets are permitted to remove the service coat once inside of the classroom. Service coats will be put back on and all buttons buttoned prior to leaving the classroom for any reason. This rule pertains to all classes attended in uniform, not just Aerospace Science class. If the windbreaker is worn at any time it must be zipped up at least 2/3 of the way to the collar.

  • Only properly issued/awarded AFJROTC items will be worn on the uniform. Civilian clothing items are not permitted to be worn with the AFJROTC uniform without the approval of the SASI / ASI.

  • The uniform will always be clean, pressed, and in good appearance when worn. Trousers, slacks, skirts, service coats, and windbreakers are dry clean only. Shirts and blouses may be machine washed on permanent press cycle and pressed with a clean iron on medium heat. Never wash the “dry clean” items, as this will cause fading, shrinkage, and seam damage. Never iron the “dry clean” items as they will scorch easily.

  • All buttons will be buttoned, and all zippers will be completely zipped, as directed. All missing buttons or loose buttons will be replaced. Buttons on the service dress coat are oxidized silver; do not try to shine them as this could lead to damage. All loose strings / threads will be trimmed.

  • No bulky items will be placed in uniform pockets. Articles that bulge or protrude in any manner which would cause the uniform to be viewed in an unprofessional appearance should be removed from pockets. It is highly recommended that cadets not put pens/ pencils in shirt or pants pockets, as they often leak and are liable to damage the uniform item. Cadets will be considered financially responsible for all avoidable damage conditions to uniform items.

  • All shoes must be clean and shined to a high gloss finish. A considerable amount of work is necessary to achieve and maintain a quality shine on a pair of military issue leather shoes. Never use liquid polish or floor wax as it could cause the leather to dry and crack severely. Wear of ever-shine “corfam” style shoes is not permitted, unless authorized by the SASI/ASI.

  • Socks worn in uniform must be solid black (without design). Females may wear black, navy, dark blue, off-black, dark brown, light brown, tan, or neutral hose without design.

  • A maximum of three rings across both hands may be worn. Thumb rings are not permitted while in uniform.

  • Conservative wristwatches and/or identification bracelets may be worn.

  • Jewelry, such as religious medallions, may be worn but must be tucked inside of the shirt and not visible.

  • The flight cap will be worn whenever the cadet is outside unless under a covered area. Sequoyah High School is a designated “No Hat” area, therefore cadets are not required to wear the flight cap while on campus during school hours.

  • Books and other items will be carried in the left hand to permit proper rendering of the salute when appropriate. Hands will not be placed in pockets at any time.

  • Bags, backpacks, and duffels will be carried on the left or both arms in order to permit proper rendering of the hand salute when appropriate.

  • A commercial design solid black or dark blue umbrella may be used by cadets in uniform. Cadets will carry the umbrella in the left hand to permit rendering of the salute when appropriate.

   V. Proper Uniform Wear

Shirt:

  • All male shirts will be tucked into the trousers at all times. The shirt will be pulled in tight at the sides and folded to render a tailored appearance. The only creases in the shirt will be down the sleeves.

  • If wearing the short sleeve shirt without a tie, male cadets must wear a solid white V-neck undershirt.

  • All buttons will be buttoned with the exception of the top collar button of the short sleeve shirt when worn without the tie.

  • Nothing should be placed in the shirt pockets, especially pens which may leak.

  • The tie is optional with the short sleeve shirt. When wearing the service coat, a tie must be worn.

Pants:

  • Pants should not bunch at the waist or bag in the seat.

  • The front bottom of the pants will rest on the front of the arch of the shoe with a slight break in the crease. The bottom back of the pants will extend approximately 7/8" longer than the front.

  • The rear pocket of the pants must be buttoned at all times.

Shoes:

  • All male cadets will be issued one pair of Air Force “Oxfords” (black leather shoes)

  • Shoes must be clean and polished black at all times

  • Do not use a liquid polish or floor wax on these shoes!

  • Fourth year cadets may purchase the shiny “corfam” shoes at their own expense, however, the SASI / ASI may direct Air Force standard leather shoes be worn at any time, including weekly ULD inspections.

  • All male cadets will wear dark black socks at all times when in uniform.

  • Socks will be plain, without design, and of sufficient length so that bare leg is not visible when seated.

Flight Cap:

  • Sequoyah High School is a designated “No Hat” area, so flight caps are not to be worn on campus during school hours.

  • When not on school grounds or if on grounds after hours in uniform, you must wear the flight cap.

  • The cap is worn centered on the head approximately one inch above the eyebrows.

  • The crown (top rear) of the cap should not be crushed into a “widow’s peak.”

  • The front of the hair should not extend down below the cap front.

  • Cadets will remove the cap immediately upon entering a building or other covered location. The cap may be tucked under the belt on the left side with the opening of the cap facing to the left.

Belt:

  • The dark blue Air Force issue belt with the silver tip and silver buckle will be worn with all combinations of the cadet dress blue uniform.

  • Males will thread their belts counterclockwise through the trouser eyelets. Females will thread their belts clockwise.

  • The silver tip end of the belt extends beyond the buckle with no blue fabric showing.

  • The buckle will be aligned with the fly of the pants and the line of the shirt (this is called the “gig line”).
