CHAPTER 9

CONDUCT AND CLASSROOM PROCEDURE

   I. Introduction

The objectives of AFJROTC are to educate and train students in citizenship and life skills, promote community service, instill a sense of responsibility, and develop character and self- discipline through education and instruction in air and space fundamentals and the Air Force's core values of "Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do."

To accomplish this and evaluate our success, AFJROTC cadets are expected to operate with a minimum of supervision and display outstanding leadership and qualities of citizenship.

   II. Conduct

The AFJROTC program sets high moral and ethical standards which cadets are expected to accept and follow. Every cadet wearing the AFJROTC uniform at Sequoyah High School represents all cadets at Sequoyah. If one cadet knowingly violates the Cadet Honor Code, or intentionally violates any AFJROTC / school standard of conduct, the cadet’s actions must be addressed by the appropriate authority immediately, fairly, and impartially.

Corrective measures for classroom actions deemed serious violations of standards of conduct established for AFJROTC cadets and/or Sequoyah High School students will ultimately be determined by the Sequoyah High School administrative personnel.

   III. Courtesies Rendered to Adults

Cadets are expected to treat all adults with the utmost level of respect. Adults are always to be addressed as "Mr."/"Ms." (last name). In conversation, they are answered "Yes sir/ma'am".

   IV. Inappropriate behavior

Cadets are expected to maintain an image of professionalism both in and out of uniform. Therefore, it stands that all cadets should avoid certain behaviors and tendencies in order to avoid tarnishing the reputation of the cadet, the corps, and the school. All behaviors deemed inappropriate are prohibited while representing the AFJROTC Corps of Cadets.

Examples of inappropriate behavior:

  • Disobeying instructions

  • Disrespect

  • Horseplay

  • Public display of affection

  • Disparaging remarks

  • Verbal threats

  • Physical attacks

  • Consuming alcohol

  • Tobacco use

  • Damaging public or private property

  • Verbal Maltreatment

  • Hazing/Initiations

   V. Verbal Abuse

Verbal abuse or maltreatment is defined as any statement that degrades an individual based on color, national origin, race, religion, age, ethnic group, gender, or physical appearance. Verbal abuse is not allowed in any circumstance or situation. Use of profanity and any language that condones immoral, unethical, or illegal behavior, promotes sexual harassment or other unprofessional conduct isn't allowed. Verbal Abuse is not condoned and will not be tolerated.

   VI. Physical Discipline and Hazing

Any form of hazing, whether verbal or physical, will not be tolerated within any AFJROTC unit or activity. In addition, requiring cadets, individually or as a group, to perform any physical action as a reprimand, punishment, or for failure to perform will also not be tolerated. Cadets will not condone or encourage any type of hazing or initiation rituals.

Examples of prohibited physical activities include, but are not limited to: push- ups, running laps, or any inappropriate physical contact such as shoving, pulling or grabbing.

Any form of verbal abuse, teasing, public rebuke, or any attempt to otherwise humiliate a cadet is prohibited. This prohibition is applicable to all AFJROTC unit activities, and includes instructors, cadets and any personnel involved with or participating in an AFJROTC unit or activity.

   VII. Quibbling

When a cadet officer or NCO gives an order, it can be considered to be an order from the Commander, SASI, or ASI. This means that orders should be followed. Cadets have the right to disagree and present their ideas, but all reasonable orders should be followed. Cadets who feel they are not being treated fairly should see their flight commander, and if necessary, take their complaints up the chain of command.

   VIII. Classroom Procedure

A cadet arriving late for class will enter the room quietly and precede directly to his/her seat, without comment. Immediately after class is dismissed, the late cadet(s) will report to the SASI / ASI with either a written excuse note (above) or verbal explanation as to why he/she was late for class. Detention will be assigned for each unexcused tardy.

The following procedures will be followed at the beginning of each class period:

  1. Cadets will enter the room quietly, place their phones in the receptacle if necessary, and immediately proceed to their designated seat.

  2. Cadets will place their course materials on the table and all other carried material on the floor next to their position. Cadets will remain at their table position At Ease (speaking quietly is permitted).

  3. When the bell rings, the Flight Commander will call the class to “Attention,” then “Parade Rest.” When a cadet’s name is called, he/she will come to Attention and respond, “Present,” then return to Parade Rest.

  4. After roll call is completed, the Flight Commander will call the class to “Attention.” Then the flight commander will report attendance to the instructor. The instructor will give the order “Seats,” at which time all cadets will be seated.

A cadet required to leave an ongoing class will raise his/her hand and, when addressed by the instructor, will state “Sir, Cadet________, requests permission to leave the classroom.” The instructor will dismiss the cadet to the assigned appointment/administrator/restroom. Upon returning to the classroom, the cadet will quietly enter and return directly to his/her seat, without comment.

When the bell rings to end the class period, the Flight Commander will immediately call the class to “Attention.” Once the Flight is at Attention, the instructor will order “Dismissed” and cadets may depart. The Flight Commander will be responsible for ensuring that the classroom is clean and neat when his/her flight departs. The last class of the day will place the chairs on top of the tables before departing the room unless directed otherwise by the ASI or SASI.

   IX. Classroom Conduct

Cadets are expected to be actively engaged in the day’s activities, as well as carry themselves in a manner respectful to the instructors. All classes will be conducted in an orderly manner. Cadets will not:

  • Leave the classroom without the instructor’s permission.

  • Talk while the instructor is teaching without permission.

  • Put his/her feet on the table.

  • Throw anything.

  • Tilt chairs forward or backward onto two legs.

  • Deface the tables and/or chairs.
